Save the Tamaraw Theme of Philippine Stamps

First Day of Issue: January 25, 2013 - Philippines

The Philippines has issued a pair of new postage stamps featuring Far Eastern University's "Save the Tamaraw" project.

The Tamaraw is a small and shy wild dwarf buffalo found only on the island of Mindoro. Mascot of Far Eastern University's athletic teams, the Tamaraw is now an endangered species. The FEU project provides support for continual management and research-oriented programs.

Tristan Albatross Featured on Postage Stamps

Tristan da Cunha has issued a set of four postage stamps featuring the Tristan Albatross.

The Tristan Albatross was only recently widely recognized as a full species in 1998. This stamp was issued in association with the World Wild Life Fund for Nature (WWF), an international organisation working towards conservation and sustainability.

Kiipsaare Lighthouse Featured on Estonian Stamp

First Day of Issue: January 31, 2013 - Estonia

Estonia has issued a new postage stamp celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Kiipsaare Lighthouse.

Kiipsaare Lighthouse is located on the Harilaid peninsula on the northwest coast of the island of Saaremaa in Estonia.

The lighthouse was built at the tip of the peninsula, then on land, in 1933. Today rising seas has resulted in the lighthouse now being a few meters from shore.

Moonwort and European Roller on Belarus Stamps

First Day of Issue: January 30, 2013 - Belarus

Belarus will issue a pair of new postage stamps in their series The Red Book of the Republic of Belarus.

The Belarus Red Book was created to protect rare and vanishing species of plants and animals.

The first stamp features Moonwort which is a small fern with fleshy roots and reproduces by shedding spores into the air.

The second stamp depicts a pigeon sized European Roller which is a bright and colorful bird featuring blue, brown, and black colors.

Both the Moonwort and the European Roller were added to the Red Book twenty years ago in 1993.

Postage Stamp Honors Winter Special Olympics

First Day of Issue: January 29, 2013 - South Korea

South Korea has issued a new postage stamp honoring the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

The 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea from January 29 through February 5, 2013.

The Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization was founded by Eunice (Kennedy) Shriver, sister of President John F. Kennedy, and held its first International Special Olympics Summer Games in 1968 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Land Development Theme of New Dutch Stamps

First Day of Issue: January 28, 2013 - Netherlands

The Netherlands has issued a set of ten new postage stamps celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Royal Netherlands Land Development Society.

Founded in 1888, the Royal Netherlands Land Development Society was established by private individuals for the development of agricultural land, reforestation of sandy areas, and improvement of employment.

The legacy of the Royal Netherlands Land Development Society will be in the hands of two organisations: ARCADIS, an international enterprise that provides project management, advice and engineering services for improving accessibility, sustainability and the quality of living, and KNHM, an organisation that helps residents improve their neighbourhood, district, village or town.

Each of the ten stamps features a photograph of one of the projects from one of these two organizations.

Heart of Hermes Theme of New Postage Stamps

First Day of Issue: January 28, 2013 - France

France has issued a set of postage stamps with the theme Heart of Hermes.

For France's annual Heart stamp, designers were asked to turn some of the French luxury brand Hermes's iconic scarves into postage stamps.

The winning designer was Hermes's designer Zoé Pauwels whose illustration includes small hearts, birds, and shooting stars brought together by cloudy ribbons. Two swans embody tenderness, love and fidelity.

Hungary Honors Košice with New Postage Stamp

Hungary has issued a new postage stamp honoring the city of Košice as the 2013 European Capital of Culture, a title it will hold along with Marseille, France.

Košice is a city is eastern Slovakia near the border with Hungary. It is an important industrial center whose largest employer is U.S. Steel.

Each year the European Union designates a European Capital of Culture, a title that is held for one year during which the city will organize a series of cultural events with a strong European dimension.

Bunschoten-Spakenburg Honored on Stamp

First Day of Issue: January 28, 2013 - Netherlands

The Netherlands has issued a new postage stamp honoring the village of Bunschoten-Spakenburg as part of their Beautiful Netherlands series.

Bunschoten is a Dutch village that traces its roots back to the 13th century. Spakenburg was a nearby town that due to the rapid growth of both towns in the 20th century, merged with Bunschoten to become one village.

Until 2011, the “Beautiful Netherlands” series was dedicated to cities. For 2012 and 2013 PostNL has opted for a new coherent thematic approach and has chosen historic country houses and regional dress respectively.

The stamp features a small bonnet called an "ongermuts" that is worn on the back of the head by women of this town.

Netherlands Honors Staphorst with Postage Stamp


First Day of Issue: January 28, 2013 - Netherlands

The Netherlands has issued a new postage stamp honoring the village of Staphorst as part of their Beautiful Netherlands series.

Staphorst is a village in eastern Netherlands that traces its roots back to the 13th century and the cultivation of the surrounding moorland. The typical pattern was to build farms along a single road through the moor which has been referred to as "ribbon urbanization." This type of village is common in many parts of the Netherlands.

Until 2011, the “Beautiful Netherlands” series was dedicated to cities. For 2012 and 2013 PostNL has opted for a new coherent thematic approach and has chosen historic country houses and regional dress respectively.

The stamp features a head brooch that is part of the head cover worn by women and girls in the village of Staphorst and the surrounding region. This head brooch evolved from clips in the 1600s that were used to keep a bonnet in place.

Track cycling is one of the most popular and oldest disciplines of cycling. About 500 of the world's leading racers from more than 50 countries will take part in the 2013 Track Cycling World Championship.

Hong Kong has launched a new Lunar New Year Animals series with a sheetlet of two stamps depicting the Dragon and Snake.

The end of the Year of the Dragon ushers in a blissful Year of the Snake. In traditional Chinese culture, the Dragon is a sacred and auspicious creature which represents might and nobility, while the Snake is a symbol of fortune and longevity signifying good harvest and fertility.

Different from the last series, the Dragon stamp is hot-foiled with silver while the Snake stamp is affixed with the first-ever 22K gold-plated lace metal.

Love Padlock Theme of Slovenia Postage Stamp

Slovenia has issued a new postage stamp honoring the growing tradition of Love Padlocks.

In order to show their commitment to eternal love, Slovene couples have been increasingly hanging padlocks on the Mesarski Most Bridge (Butcher's Bridge) in Ljubljana.

Although no one is certain where the European tradition of hanging love padlocks began, the explanations vary by location, it appears the recent wave of padlocks started appearing in the early 2000s.

Arlington Green Bridge Honored on Postage Stamp

The United States has issued a new Priority Mail postage stamp featuring the Arlington Green Bridge.

The Arlington Green Bridge is a covered bridge located off Vermont Route 313 in Arlington, Vermont. Built in 1852 to cross the Batten Kill river, the bridge is believed to be one of the most photographed bridges in Vermont. The bridge was closed in 2011 due to damage from Hurricane Irene.

Slovenia has issued a new postage stamp celebrating the 200th birthday of Fran Miklošič.

Fran Miklošič was a Slovene philologist. During the European revolutions of 1848, known in some countries as the Spring of Nations, Miklošič was actively engaged in the Slovene national movement. He was among authors who demanded a United Slovenia. Although these demands failed, they remained part of the Slovene national movement until World War I.

The Empire Theater is considered to be the oldest surviving theatre building in Slovakia. The theatre was built in 1801-1802 for Joseph Erdödy and his wife Elizabeth Mayer.

Joseph Erdödy came from a Hungarian noble family and was an important dignitary to the imperial court.

Folk Costumes of Ljubljana Theme of New Stamp

Slovenia has issued a new postage stamp on the theme of Folk Costumes from Ljubljana.

Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia. It is centrally located in Slovenia in the Ljubljana Basin.

The stamp depicts a painting by Austrian artist Franz von Kurz Goldenstein (1807-1878) who settled in Ljubljana in 1834. In 1838 he painted the fisherman and his bridesmaid in order to present an image of the clothing of the people from the Ljubljana suburb of Trnovo.

Iceland Celebrates 150th Anniversary of the

Iceland will issue a new postage stamp honoring the 150th anniversary of the National Museum.

The stamp depicts the cloth of Staðarhóls-Páll, embroidered with silk threads on linseed linen. The cloth is tightly stitched with floral and leaf patterns, animals and people in 16th century attire. The cloth is of foreign origin but came to the museum from Breidafjördur and was regarded as a great treasure at the time.

Butterfly Graces New U.S. Postage Stamp

The spectacular spicebush swallowtail butterfly graces the third butterfly stamp for use on large greeting card envelopes.

The stamp art was created on a computer, using images of preserved butterflies as a starting point. The result is a highly stylized, simplified image of a spicebush swallowtail rather than an exact replica.
